Welcome to Chois R Us, a project with the aim of introducing Martial Arts in Aberdeenshire schools to children with special needs.

My name is Brian Jay and I started this project because my 16 year old son James, who is partially sighted and has been diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome, was either bullied or refused access to some sports activities because of his sight. James is now a 2nd degree black belt.

I started up Dyce Choi Kwang Do to train him and give him something to do.
The result was he became fitter, more confident, helps with other children in class, and achieved his black belt all of which raised his self esteem.

I am also a magician and had entertained some special needs children who through that, found out that I taught martial arts and wanted to train as well.

When I speak to the parents of these children I realise their stories are very similar to mine.

Therefore, I set up this project to give special needs children access to martial arts. I am actively teaching in Marlpool school in Aberdeen, which is now listed as a proper martial arts class, the first of its kind, i.e. a whole class of special needs children.

I have special needs children in my regular classes. I also teach at Hazlewood School in Aberdeen, Dyce, Kenmay and Airyhall, and the results have been fantastic.

My long term goals are firstly to get as many special needs chidren on board (who want to take part) training in martial arts as it makes such a difference and gives them an activity they can all take part in.

Secondly, to try and change the way we treat these children as we usually treat them differently from others.
